Active Matter crossplay and progress
The short answer
Yes, Active Matter has crossplay — and it is not a single on/off switch. There are three matchmaking pools, and you choose which one you are in from the settings:
- Your platform only.
- Consoles only — Xbox and PlayStation together, with no PC players.
- Any platform — everyone.
Crossplay is a choice rather than a forced state, which matters most for console players who want the larger pool without ending up in PC lobbies.
Crossplay is not cross-progression
This is the part that catches people out, and it is worth reading before you decide which platform to buy on:
- Progress is shared only between Steam and Gaijin.Net on PC. If you own the PC version on both storefronts, that is the one pairing where progress follows you.
- Progress does not move between PC and consoles. Buying the game on PS5 and on Steam means two separate accounts with two separate progress tracks.
- Editions do not transfer either. An edition you buy on one platform stays on that platform.
So the practical rule is: decide which platform you will actually play on, and buy there. Crossplay lets you *play* with friends elsewhere; it does not let you *carry* anything there.
The official contradiction, stated plainly
The publisher's own material says two different things about progression.
- The official FAQ says progress cannot be moved between the PC and console versions and is shared only between the Steam and Gaijin.Net versions on PC.
- The purchase pop-up on the game's own homepage says: "Your game progress is shared across all platforms."
These cannot both be true. We follow the FAQ, because a store-agnostic support answer about account behaviour is a more deliberate statement than a purchase-prompt line, and because the FAQ's narrower claim is consistent with how account-linked progression normally works on console storefronts. We are recording the contradiction rather than quietly picking the convenient version, and we will update this page if the publisher corrects either statement.
If you are making a purchase decision on the strength of this, treat "progress follows me everywhere" as unconfirmed at best.
How to change your pool
The three-way split is selected in the game's settings rather than at the store, so you can switch between sessions. If you want to play with console friends and avoid PC lobbies, that is the console-only pool; if your group is split three ways, the any-platform pool is the only one that includes everyone.
What about Xbox Play Anywhere?
The Xbox store listing is marked Xbox Play Anywhere, which normally means an Xbox purchase also grants the PC version through the Microsoft Store. Whether progress is shared between those two copies is not described in the material we checked, and we do not assume it behaves like cross-progression. If you are buying on Xbox specifically to also play on PC, that is a question worth confirming with platform support before you buy.
What we cannot tell you
We do not publish per-pool population figures. There is no compliant source for concurrent-player data by platform or by matchmaking pool, so the page does not estimate lobby health — the same boundary that applies to the site's player-count position. What can be said is structural: the console-only pool exists specifically so that console players are not forced into PC lobbies at launch, which is the design intent, not a measurement of how busy each pool is.
