Active Matter
Active Matter is a buy-to-play extraction shooter set in a fractured multiverse: you drop into quantum-unstable zones, fight other players and monsters from other realities, harvest active matter and extract before the zone collapses. It launched in full on 15 September 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with three separate crossplay pools that each player selects.

The full release landed on 15 September 2026 and there was no wipe — progress and purchases from the early PC version carried over.
The no-wipe answer is the developers' own wording in the 7 September Developer Q&A; the release date is corroborated by the Steam store page and the official launch announcements.

Buy decision
The short version
Active Matter is buy-to-play, not free-to-play. The Standard edition is $29.99, and the editions differ only in the weapons, equipment and in-game resources they hand you — the official FAQ states that everything else available to buyers is identical. So the question is not whether you can pay for power, but whether the current build is stable enough on the platform you already own.
It is a PvPvE extraction shooter first: the main mode is extraction raids, with PvP and a dedicated PvE mode alongside it. The developers confirm that some locations are PvPvE-exclusive, some PvP and some PvE-only, and they have not published which is which.

Reasons it holds up
- Launched in full on 15 Sep 2026 with no wipe, so early-version progress and purchases carried over.
- PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S all launched the same day, and the official FAQ confirms Steam Deck and native Linux support.
- Crossplay gives consoles a console-only pool, so Xbox and PlayStation players are not forced into PC lobbies.
Reasons to wait
- Steam sits at Mostly Positive — 74% of 499 Steam-purchaser reviews on 17 Sep 2026 — so launch-window reception is warm rather than strong.
- The detailed post-launch roadmap is still unpublished; the developers only commit to "within a couple of weeks after release".
- Progress does not follow you between console and PC — shared progress exists only between Steam and Gaijin.Net on PC.

Evidence boundary
What this page does not claim
We do not publish a live player count: there is no compliant, programmable source for a per-app concurrent-player series, so we say that instead of drawing a curve. We also do not assign zones to PvE, PvPvE or PvP — the official FAQ confirms all three zone types exist but not which zone is which, so those cells stay Pending on the maps table rather than being guessed.
Where the official sources disagree
The official FAQ says progress cannot move between the PC and console versions and is shared only between the Steam and Gaijin.Net versions on PC. The purchase pop-up on the game's own homepage says the opposite — that game progress is shared across all platforms. We follow the FAQ, treat this as an unresolved contradiction inside the official material, and will update this page and the crossplay page if Gaijin corrects either statement.
